Curator's Review
Agus Dermawan T.
Sunandar Agus is a self-taught painter. Pursued higher education in a college of Foreign Languages. But his desire to become a painter seems beat all the sciences that existed in formal education. That's why he decided to stay in Bali as a painter until 1976. Even then lived in Saudi Arabia and Cairo, Egypt to studied calligraphy and ancient Egyptian mythology, then continued to live in Amsterdam, Netherlands to studied modern art.
From the dynamics of his journey hither and there, proved that Sunandar Agus is a painter who continues to search. He had been in the scope of realism, and then impressionism. Certainly, he had ever worked on Arabic calligraphy or handwriting art (khat). And now, like most of his works that exhibited, he's on the field of painting that could be called essentialism, because he focus on the lines and colors which is essence of the forms and situation setting that he appreciated on his life. An art idea and style that reminds us to suprematism Kasjmir Malevich, which triggered more than half a century ago, although in his presentation, frankly, a number of Sunandar Agus's paintings are more tempting.
And then in the field of his paintings, we introduced with a man riding a horse while carrying the bride, a couple dancing under the moon light, a woman playing a guitar, a cat, and others. Those figures depicted through a flat and orderly lines, impressive, with the cubistic viewing principles. While his background that offers setting displayed on multiple layers of color. On the view of the last works of Sunandar Agus, it's not a mistake when we call it with "decorative essentialism".
